MILITARY WRITER
Established in 2005, the Military Writer Project is a collection of unofficial, non-authoritative websites aimed at assisting military members with routine writing requirements. Although there is significant overlap in the types of writing required across the services, content is divided by service to aid in organization. The goals of this project are to give members a voice and provide a space for unofficial, standardized references and content that isn't available on official military sites.
With almost 1,300 pages on-line, navywriter.com hosts the largest collection and widest variety of Navy evaluations and awards available anywhere, sorted by rating and collateral duty. It also includes examples of opening and closing eval statements and rater comments for every level of rating. In addition, some Marine Corps and Coast Guard examples are included.
Armywriter.com is a practical community resource for U.S. Army personnel that provides writing guides, evaluation examples, and templates. It helps soldiers draft performance reports, awards, and counselings and boasts the largest collection of NCOER support material available anywhere, including bullet comments, duty descriptions, and awards organized by Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) and duty position.
AirForceWriter.com hosts a wide variety of content to satisfy daily Air Force administrative requirements, including counseling procedures and examples, sponsor letters, letters of recommendation, character statements, and quarterly and annual awards. It also generated two spin-off websites, dedicated to the writing of Enlisted Performance Reports, eprbullets.com and eprbulletsafsc.com.
When writing performance reports, recommendations, and awards in a joint environment, it can get confusing because of the individual service terminology. However, the basic requirements across the services are the same. Annual performance reports have to be fair with the subject receiving periodic counseling and enough time to respond to that counseling. The only difference is scheduling and terms. In addition, individuals are expected to be assigned responsibilities commensurate with their rank and meet pre-defined performance expectations. Below is a chart listing all military ranks for all services to help assess levels of responsibility in a joint environment. Note that neither the Air Force or Space Force have Warrant Officer grades.
